Unit 8: Festivals Around the World
What do you know about festivals in other countries? Read about these celebrations in various countries and answer the questions about them.

Holi
People all over India celebrate the beginning of spring for two days at the end of February. The festival is called Holi. People light bonfires on the first night, but it's on the second day that the real fun starts. People go around the streets and the parks throwing coloured powder and water at each other until everyone is red, orange, blue and yellow. It's lots of fun, but you have to wear old clothes. This is why another name for Holi is the Festival Of Colour.

In the evening, families and friends meet for feasts and celebrations. Then itIs safe to put on nice clothes!

Boy's Day
On May 5th, families all over Japan celebrate Boy's Day. Families who have sons fly a paper flag in the shape of a carp on a bamboo stick – one for every son. The carp is a very strong fish and on this day parents show their sons that they are strong and important to the family.

The celebration is sometimes called Children's Day, but is really only for boys. Girl's Day is another celebration which takes place in March.

The Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is one of the most interesting festivals in Mexico because, in spite of its name, it is a happy celebration. It is the day that the dead can come back to visit their families. After sunset on November 1st, people take big bunches of colourful flowers to the local cemetery. There are candles and music everywhere.

The atmosphere is more like a carnival. Families go to the graves of their relatives and cook there, tell stories about the dead, listen to their favourite songs and enjoy themselves.
