greenwashing
/'grinw/ AmE -w -; -w-/ noun [U] the publishing of particular information by an organization to make people think that the organization cares about the environment: Greenwashing is what corporations do when they try to make themselves look more environmentally friendly than they really are. Many large industries are using greenwashing techniques to sell themselves these days. Greenpeace accused the EU of greenwashing today, for classifying incineration of biodegradable waste as a source of renewable energy.

The word greenwash is formed from two existing words, green and whitewash. The word green is often used in relation to environmental issues: the Green party, and is also used as a verb, meaning to make somebody or something more aware of issues related to the environment: The company has unveiled a major rebranding in a deliberate attempt to green the company.
The figurative use of the word whitewash describes an attempt to hide unpleasant facts about something.
