Introduction
Our rainforests are sometimes called the “lungs of our planet” because they produce much of the world’s oxygen. Apart from that, more than half of the world’s estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests.
Year by year, however, huge areas of the rainforests are being destroyed. Some scientists predict that if deforestation goes on at current rates, all the rainforests will be cut down within the next 50 years.
In this web-unit you will first take part in a virtual rainforest tour and learn about the importance of our rainforests for our civilization. You will have the chance to find out what you can do to save the rainforests and you will be encouraged to have a look at different actions which have been taken by young people. You can even take part in one action by writing a letter or an e-mail.
