Life expectancy

Do you think these things will increase or decrease your life expectancy? Select "increase" or "decrease" for each one, then click on "Check your answers".

1) smoking
2) eating healthy foods
3) eating fatty foods
4) drinking lots of alcohol
5) drinking a little alcohol
6) living in a place with air pollution
7) drinking lots of coffee
8) drinking green tea
9) getting a suntan
10) living near your family
11) taking exercise

Now you're going to calculate your own life expectancy!

First you need to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index). This is a measurement which tells you if you are the right weight for your height.

Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/fightingfat/bmimetric.shtml and calculate your BMI. Write it down.

When you are finished, go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/education/gigaquiz/
gigaquiz.pl/0/health_calculator/health_calculator
and answer the questions to find your life expectancy. (Don't worry if you don't understand some of the questions – just guess.)

Now go back to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/education/gigaquiz/
gigaquiz.pl/0/health_calculator/health_calculator
and try the quiz again. This time give the answers which you think will give

  • the highest life expectancy
  • the lowest life expectancy

Compare your answers with your friends. Who can get the highest and lowest life expectancies?
