Task 3: Germans in Australia

There are a lot of people from different cultural backgrounds in Australia. The Migration Heritage Centre in Haymarket collects and preserves the history of migration of the Australian state New South Wales.

Get together with a partner to prepare a short presentation about German people who have migrated to Australia. Look at the website “Belongings”. On this website people talk about why they left Germany and started a new life in Australia. Their belongings are symbols for their journey to Australia.
Chose one person or couple and write down answers to the following questions on your worksheet. Present your results to the class. Don’t get nervous if you don’t understand everything in the text. Just try to find out the most important things about the person.
- Where had the people lived before they went to Australia?
- Where and when did they arrive in Australia?
- Where did they first live after their arrival?
- What was their first job?
- Which belongings are important for them and why?

When you have finished, you can also try to answer these questions:
- Why did they migrate and what do they say about their journey to Australia?
- What do they say about their arrival in the foreign country?
- Would you like to migrate to another country? Why? Why not?
